Bret Tanzer is an Emmy-nominated production designer working across film and television. His approach is meticulous, tactile and occasionally a little punk rock Ⓐ

His origin story starts in a childhood garage—printing band merch and building miniature sets for scrappy stop-motion music videos—and continues at CalArts (because Tim Burton and Paul Rubens went there), where he studied experimental animation. A pivotal moment came while working in the model shop on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, where the film’s massive practical sets opened his eyes to large-scale world-building that still informs his work today. Since then, he has collaborated with filmmakers including Ti West, Josh Ruben, and Steven Soderbergh.

Bret lives with his partner, his kiddos, and an elderly yet fervent Chihuahua named Razmig. He travels whenever possible, rides a BMX bike with unreasonable confidence, tattoos friends and crew members brave enough to volunteer, and teaches his children to be kind, never litter, and swear only when it’s hilarious.
